This prestigious development is a multiple phase mixed use development in the Nine Elms area of London built around the American Embassy building. The project is split into eight plots, that provide around 2000 residential units and 500,000 sq ft of commercial space. There is also an extravagant Sky Pool that is placed between two of the structures. We were uniquely placed to design an innovative range of both concrete and steel solutions and also advised on the ground remediation of this former gasworks site. The heavy contamination & scour feature in the northern half of the site presented challenges, however through working with each of the design teams we were able to avoid basements, while giving careful consideration to the foundation’s construction. We were able to develop a standard frame system across the residential sites using long span P.T flat slab construction that allowed flexibility for apartment layouts and resulted in a regular open column grid in the low level commercial spaces. Bringing the concept of the SkyPool to life was extremely satisfying to witness. We designed the bridging blocks as steel and concrete hybrid structures using vierendeel trusses to span between adjacent blocks. Further collaboration was carried out with the post designers to ensure that differential horizontal and vertical building movements could be resisted by the pool at support points.
