A £42 million, 452 bed Student Accommodation project at 5 Miles Street in London’s Vauxhall. This 33-storey building includes a wealth of personal and communal study areas, lounges; and a cycle store, together with significant enhancements to the public realm. An innovative piled raft foundation solution enabled the superstructure of this 32 storey tower to commence on programme, and earned the project a shortlisting for a 2017 Ground Engineering Award. The substructure design of this project saw us overcome a number of challenges including a very small site, sensitive settlement requirements and a tight construction programme. The combination of a restricted site next to a Network Rail viaduct and several existing buildings, meant that it was not possible to undertake a pile load test. In collaboration with our consultants we devised a piled raft solution; utilising the high level ground to limit deflections.
“We have undertaken a number of similar projects with Urbanest and are experienced in finding innovative solutions and technologies like the piled raft platform to ensure the best possible results for this type of scenario.” Andy Stanford – Walsh Director.
