Providing engineering services on this vital part of the Olympic Park was a proud moment for the team. We provided the detailed design for the post-tensioned (PT) slabs and pre-cast columns on this Allies and Morrison designed project. Concrete mixes using up to 50% recycled aggregate were used in the concrete frame to satisfy the high quota for recycled materials set by the Olympic Delivery Authority. Test data and previous experience were used to justify a cement replacement of 30% in the post-tensioned slab concrete mix. Cement replacement is traditionally not used, to this extent, in post-tensioned concrete due to early strength gain requirements. Walsh worked closely with post tensioned contractors to develop and test the concrete mixes to make the concrete as sustainable as possible while maintaining sufficient strength criteria.
